Diving into Python

(10:07 pm) Tags: [General]

Just finished the first chapter of Dive into Python. I have to give Mark Pilgrim credit for writing a clear, concise pythonism. Onto Chapter 2 tomorrow.

Dean will be President in 2005

(9:54 pm) Tags: [General]

… “However, should President George W. Bush order the combat use of nuclear weapons before November of 2004, his electability would jump to 165, comfortably larger than any of the possible Democratic candidates.”

I have seen all I need to see. I have now been given mathematical proof that Dean will be president. All I have to do now is wait.

Markup fu

(1:03 pm) Tags: [Software]

Found a very enlightening article on markup languages (Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Manuals) through Don Park. I think we are now over the Gartner ‘hype’ phase and moving on to mainstream use. Maybe we can even get rid of our geek acne.

“Thanks to my mega-model, minimalist and mu markup phases, I now know a few approaches that are *not* the answer. The latest one that I know is not the answer is XSLT — on its own.”

I would say that I am stuck in the minimalist phase, and I don’t know how to get out. Until we can actually teach tools about new markup, why should we be invented huge vocabularies that only our geek friends care about, and then only to critique (ridicule) them? If only RDF was as easy as HTML :(

My Mac is heading south for the winter

Last night I lost Mail.app. It opens up, then locks up after about 5 seconds. Connected or not.

This morning iChat AV is locked up with no hope.

Problem here is, what should my google search be? anything with mail in the search returns a gajillion results. Apple’s support site is no help either.

Guess I will be switching mail applications for now.
